Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Players can upgrade their weapons and equipment with new attachments. They can also boost its stats base or add additional benefits. To upgrade an item, a player has to have it in their inventory as well as access to the kiln.
Usually items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base, whereas items with strong bases such as eth titans do not vary much in their stats after being upgraded.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors, trinkets, and gathering tools. They give you an attribute benefit, or an additional benefit, while the equipment is in use. They can be bought from vendors, gathered in loot, thrown away by enemies or as a reward from missions or chests. Certain upgrades come with additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require that the equipment be at a certain level to upgrade.
To upgrade a weapon or piece of armor, the user must select it and then click on the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will display on the right-hand side of the screen a preview showing the expected upgrade stats and the necessary component or materials.
There are three types of upgrade components that are universal upgrades, prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrades. Universal upgrades, such as gems, are able to be used on any kind of equipment. They offer a lesser bonus than upgrade components that have a specific type restriction. Infusions are gems that can only be used in equipment that is legendary or ascended. They offer the same bonuses as jewels, but they cannot be used in other equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They add a suffix to the end of item names. For instance, adding a Glyph could transform the staff wrapping of Minor Vigor a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.
In the instance of upgrades for gathering tools If a player replaces one glyph with a different one, the old glyph will be returned to the inventory. However replacing any other upgrade component will destroy it, except for the inscriptions that can be swapped.
Leveling
The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some important differences from previous versions. Gear is now classified into tracks, and each item is able to be upgraded as many times before it is "leveled out." The upgrade cost increases with each level up however the materials required do not increase as much. This allows players to focus their efforts on a specific few items and maximize the impact of these items, instead of spreading the cost of upgrades across several pieces.

The process can take as long as two hours and costs the same amount of material, though it will result in lower chances of success.
Engineers may utilize a level to compare the height of the building to an established location, such as a benchmark. This is referred to as a "level-loop." It involves taking readings using the backsight rod and the level, then turning the level to make the foresight rod reading. This method helps ensure that buildings are constructed to a high level of accuracy and safety.
Rerolling
Rerolling refers to the process of altering an item's upgrade components. It is an important aspect of the game and can drastically enhance an item's strength and damage as well as other characteristics. This can be accomplished through the item menu or using the Reroll button on an upgraded item. Rerolling can be costly and should only be performed in the rarest of circumstances.
Reroll tokens are obtained by recycling upgraded items. These tokens can be used to upgrade either the original item or a similar item. Recyclable items have an indicator of level that indicates how much of the upgrade gauge is filled. The cost and rarity of upgrading an item will determine the level of filling.
In the past, certain upgrade items were affixed with priority that made them easier to roll for than others. This meant that you'd get the stats that mattered most to your build often than others. These included things such as the armor's total armor, thorns, and duration reduction statistics that were controlled or the weapon's bonus attack speed and critical strike chance.
This has changed since the most recent patch. Priority affixes are no longer required and all upgrades will have the same chances of rolling for every stat. This could be good or bad, based on what you're looking to get from your equipment.
Each upgraded item can also be equipped with a special bonus that boosts the power of the item by a fixed percentage or flat value. These bonuses are added into the standard affixes. The more you upgrade your product, the higher the chance of receiving an exclusive bonus.
The game also includes number sets that give an extra bonus when three or four upgraded items from the set are installed on a unit. This is a great way to give an individual character more power without spending a ton of money.
Many players prefer to reroll their gear and weapons, particularly in the beginning of the game. Rerolling can help you get a more powerful character faster, allowing players to advance in the game and attain higher tiers.
Sets
Sets are collections that can be organized in different ways. They can have various sizes, have no elements at all, or contain just one element. The upgrade of lower-level items in the set can increase their defense and make them more competitive in terms of damage.
To determine if an item is worth upgrading, players must click the Upgrade button on their screen of their character. The item's attributes will be displayed as well as any necessary items. To upgrade the No-mouth Face, for example, 1.1K Scrap Materials will be required, 250 Enchanted Dust and 5 Glowing Shards.
